Isoisä – Grandpa
Photographer, Principal lecturer, TAMK, Juha Suonpää: My grandpa Urpo took good care of me, his small grandson, as we made our annual visit to the Kalevankangas graveyard. He asked me to hold on tight to the metal handle of his suitcase so that I wouldn’t go missing. I remember looking on my eye level at the back of his broad hand, where there was a small pale and smooth impression between the veins. That was where the bullet had penetrated his hand and encapsulated itself under his skin – Tampere, Holy Thursday 1918. Grandpa had been lucky, unlike his childhood friends who now rested six feet under ground.
The photographs for the Juha Suonpää’s new photobook “Isoisä” (Grandpa) are created by using photomontage process, where the historical photos from 1918 are digitally combined with contemporary photos taken from the same locations. These montages create the path which Suonpää’s grandpa also walked in Tampere in April 1918 – only four months after Finland gained its independence.
